Description & Applications
RG coax cable, originally designated as RG-X or RG-X/U, traces its origins back to World War II when the military introduced these terms, with “RG” standing for Radio Guide. While these designations are now obsolete for their original military purposes, they are still widely used to identify the unique characteristics and specifications of various coaxial cables. For instance, the “U” in the designation signifies “for general utility use.”
RG coax cable is commonly used in high-frequency transmissions, making it ideal for applications such as transmitters, receivers, computers, radio, and TV transmissions. Thanks to the varied mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties of RG coax cable, it can support frequencies up to GHz levels, depending on the specific cable type.
While each RG coax cable type offers a variety of capabilities, below are some of the most common styles available, along with their best-suited applications:
RG6 Solid Copper Coaxial Cable
RG6 solid copper coaxial cable is the industry standard for cable and satellite signal transmission. The RG6U cable is a thin cable that can easily be coiled or bent for residential installation within a wall or ceiling.
An RG6U cable is used to connect devices that carry audio and video signal from a transmitter to a display. This includes connecting aerial antennas, satellite dishes, and cable television.
A key benefit of the RG6U cable, and a reason for its popularity, is that it often replaces RG59 cables, an earlier form of coaxial video/audio cable. Another benefit of the RG6U cable is that it can be used in many applications due to its durability against interference and various environmental conditions. It can be run underground (direct burial) as well as run up the sides of buildings to connect to antennas and satellite dishes.
The RG6U cable is a very popular cable style, and is available in plenum, non-plenum (riser), direct burial (flooded) and water blocking versions. It’s also available with various types of shields, including quad shielding.
RG11 Solid Copper Coaxial Cable
RG11 is a type of RG coaxial cable known for its thick and inflexible design, making it ideal for minimizing signal loss over long runs. This cable is typically used for outdoor or underground installations. For instance, RG11 RG coaxial cable is often placed in the front yard rather than inside the home.
RG59 Solid Copper Coaxial Cable
RG59 is another popular type of RG coaxial cable commonly used in residential settings. It functions similarly to the RG6 but features a thinner center conductor. This design makes the RG59 an excellent choice for short runs and low-frequency transmissions within the home. However, for other applications, it is generally considered less effective compared to the RG6U cable.
