Coaxial cable is a type of cable that is used to transmit radio frequency signals.  It is used mainly for distributing CATV or CCTV signals but has many other applications. It is great for use with the connection of radio transmitters and/or receivers with their antennas, for video display, security cameras, for local area network controls as well as point of sale terminal applications.

What is it?
Defining Coaxial Cable

If you were to look at a round cross section of a coaxial cable, you would find a single center solid copper wire surrounded by a tubular insulating layer, surrounded by a braided, conducting, foil shield.  They are sometimes also manufactured with an insulating jacket.

What are its advantages?
In an ideally constructed coaxial cable, the signal exists only in the space between the inner and outer conductors.  This allows for coaxial cable to be installed next to metal objects without the loss in power that sometimes occurs in other cable types.  The additional layer of shielding also allows for less signal interference from the outside environment.  This makes coax cable a great choice for carrying a weak signal that cannot tolerate interference from stronger electrical signals that are in the surrounding environment.
