Protecting Your Family From The Dangers Of Fire

A fire may double in size every 30 seconds.

Every year during the second week in October, the National Fire Protection Associationbrings fire prevention into the spotlight to help save lives and prepare families in the case of a fire-related emergency.  By bringing awareness to the subject, more lives are ultimately saved.

This year’s theme:  Two Ways Out

Just seconds can mean the difference between life and death.  That is why this year’s theme reinforces that everyone needs to have an escape plan that includes two ways out from every room in your house.

Below is a step by step guide from the NFPA to create your family’s Two Ways Out plan:

• Draw a map by using the NFPA’s grid on nfpa.org and mark two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
• Review your map with your entire family so they are aware of the plan.
• Teach children how to escape in case you cannot help them.
• Conduct a fire drill twice a year, one at night and one during the day.
• Remind everyone to close the doors behind them when they leave, to slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.

Once you have your Two Ways Out plan in place, there are other things you can do to be sure your family is prepared in the case of a fire-related emergency.  See below for other important tips.

Additional fire safety tips:

• Make sure the house number is clearly marked so that it is easy for the fire department to find.  If your house is off the beaten path or more difficult to locate, it may be a good idea to call your local fire department and be sure they know how to find you.
• Remember, once you get outside, stay outside; you never should go back inside a burning building.
• Check your smoke alarms monthly to be sure they are in good working order and be sure to replace the batteries every year.
• If your smoke alarms are more than 10 years old then it is a good idea to replace them.
• If you own an older home be sure to have an electrician check to be sure your wires are not outdated. Outdated wires are the leading cause of electrical fires.
